to process each customer. The arrival rate of customers and processing times of customers each have a

2. A hair salon has ?ve stylists chairs and four stylists. The customer arrivals average 6 per hour, and the
service times average 30 minutes. The coe?cients of variation of the inter-arrival times and the service
times are both equal to 1.
(a) 20 points Determine the utilization of the four stylists, the average number of customers in the
salon, the average number of customers waiting to be served, and the average customer waiting

(c) 10 points Two of the four stylists wish to take their vacations during the same week. What e?ect

3. An auto-rental agency has two employees at its service counter. Customers arrive at an average rate
of 18 per hour. The service times mean a service rate of 15 customers per hour. The coe?cients of
variation of the inter-arrival times and the service times are both equal to 1.
(a) 20 points Compute the following measures of service performance for this facility: utilization,
average length of waiting line, average waiting time, and average total time spent in the facility?
(b) 20 points Each additional customer gives the agency $15 in additional revenue. If the average
waiting time overall could be reduced 75%, two more customers per hour would be drawn from
competing auto-rental agencies. If the budget allows one additional employee, should that employee
be hired for $12 an hour?
